Overview

Furusato Japanese Restaurant, nestled in the heart of Johor Bahru at 53, Jalan Kuning 2, offers a compelling escape into authentic Japanese cuisine. This unassuming gem welcomes diners with cozy private rooms, some featuring striking Mt. Fuji murals, enhancing the sense of immersion and a quaint Japanese ambiance reminiscent of an onsen retreat. The atmosphere is both intimate and tranquil, ideal for families, friends, or anyone seeking a quiet, refined dining experience away from the city's bustle.

The menu is a harmonious blend of home-style and elevated dishes, celebrating fresh seafood and quality ingredients. Signature items such as the Salmon Aburi Maki showcase expertly grilled salmon paired with delicate fish roe, creating a perfect balance of smoky flavor and fresh ocean taste. Equally notable is the Chawan Mushi, a silky steamed egg custard that offers subtle umami depth. For tempura lovers, the light and crispy Tempura Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura deliver classic textures without greasiness.

Seafood selections like the Salmon Belly Sashimi and Grilled Saba Shioyaki exemplify the vibrant freshness Furusato consistently provides. Their Bara Sushi and hearty 海鲜炒饭 (seafood fried rice) offer flavorful, approachable options that highlight the kitchen’s skilled technique. Meat dishes stand out as well — the Hida Beef and Grilled Squid bring robust umami notes and perfectly cooked textures, appealing to those who appreciate regional Japanese beef cuts and grilled seafood.

Customer experiences reflect Furusato’s dedication to quality and attentive service. One regular praises the mentaiko tamago for its premium roe and flawlessly fluffy, warm tamago, while also highlighting richly flavored A3 Wagyu beef dishes that strike the right balance of savoriness without overwhelming saltiness. Though the yakiniku sauce may polarize palates, the overall freshness and authenticity remain undisputed. The ability of the chef to accommodate special requests, as shared by another diner, raises Furusato’s standing as a flexible and customer-focused establishment.

Beyond the food, Furusato’s layout—especially the private dining spaces—enhances the meal, making it a perfect venue for those looking to enjoy Japanese cuisine in a calm, personal setting. The attentive yet unobtrusive service complements the experience well, ensuring that diners leave satisfied both in taste and comfort.

In sum, Furusato is a standout in Johor Bahru’s Japanese food scene. It caters to a diverse audience—from sushi aficionados and seafood lovers to those simply craving a heartfelt, home-style Japanese meal. Its balance of authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, serene dining environment, and thoughtful service positions it as a must-visit destination for anyone seeking both quality and tranquility in their Japanese dining experience.

The best Japanese food restaurant. Highly recommend their mentaiko tamago, their mentaiko was high quality and their tamago was served hot and fluffy. Their salmon was super good too, it was grilled perfectly and seasoned well. Their cod fish was also fresh enough, traditional. Besides, they make many kinds of Japanese foods which was home style, all their foods were super delicious. Their salmon aburi sushi roll were also super good, paired with their high quality fish roe, perfect. Their katsu don were super good too, the egg was cooked well and the pork cutlet were super juicy tender inside. Their nabe was served hot just the serving time was a bit too long. Been here many times, also ordered their A3 wagyu beef shogayaki, the wagyu has a rich umami flavour paired with onions, it wasn’t too salty too which was a great pair with white rice. Their wafu steak was grilled perfectly too, the beef was juicy and lean with a bit of fatty cuts which was perfect, paired with the vinegar and rice their food wasn’t too oily too.Their yakiniku was a bit disappointed tho, the sauce was a bit too salty in my opinion but maybe because of personal taste, their udon wasn’t chewy enough too but the broth was flavourful and the ingredients were fresh.

We were given a private room for for of us. We love the food and the room we were in, the chirashi is good, but I made a request for cook fish and the chef did it so awesomely for me. We took photos with the Mt Fuji wall mural, so beautiful effect as like we were at Japan. We had fun time during this dinner.

This non-descrpt Furusato Japanese restaurant was a place we originally did not intend to visit, but we did so, as the original one we wanted to go was closed after 3pm. We came here to eat, not expecting anything but we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the ambience. We were ushered into a private room near the entrance, but the place was very conducive and private, and we felt very relaxed, like in an onsen setting with the Japanese mediation music. We order a variety of Japanese items for lunch. All were simple dishes, but surprisingly they tasted very authentic and very good. Definitely worth coming here for a meal, with good food and prices that are reasonable.

We were skeptical outside initially but eventually impressed by the food served . Fantastic food . Sashimi is fresh , vegetables are well cooked , sushi are great with superb texture , after this great experience of food tasting , we ordered more to taste , and found tempura is also authentic , not too oily. Generally happy and satisfied with the food and service here . I personally like the idea that we have our own private dining as there are partitions divider . Well, as architect/ designer , in my opinion, there is much room for improvement for the decoration or interior design. I have so much ideas for the restaurant .. hopefully can have a chance to design for the owner overall perfect

I was here this evening, having not visited this Japanese restaurant for many years. And I was its customer since its early years when it was located at "Straits View" by the coast of Johor facing Singapore. This evening I ordered a number of things: a Spicy Salad, a pair of Potato Croquettes, a Grilled Squid with just salt, and a bottle of Kirin Beer. The salad was very good and it came with deep-fried salmon skin. The potato croquettes, I dare say, were as good as those that I recently had in Japan. The squid was not very tender, but tender enough and delicious enough. The beer, although I would have preferred a draught version, was good and cold enough. Overall, everything was more than satisfactory and the service here was IMO excellent - attentive, friendly and helpful. The dining ambience here was very good as its seating was personalised into individual booths. By the way, the menu here was very very wide. I highly recommend this Japanese restaurant if you are craving for good Japanese food in Johor Bahru.
